    What Makes a Home "Smart"?

The high tech home market is inundated with smart devices: anybody can pick up a smart doorbell or motion detector or smoke alarm at their local home improvement big-box retailer. There are definitely advantages to these accessible, popular devices. But asking Alexa to play your favorite music of setting your coffee maker to go off fifteen minutes before you wake up do not create a truly integrated, automated smart home.

    So what does?

In an automated home, all the systems – including climate, security, audio video, lighting – are unified in one platform that automates and regulates everything. This platform is controlled by the home owner via their mobile device – smart phone, laptop, watch – or by voice commands. By uniting all home technology in one single platform, the home owner is able to easily monitor and control the aspects of their home life to provide greater comfort, ease, and savings. In short: an automated home means a more comfortable home life, in line with the owner’s design and aesthetic for living.

While it’s possible to buy a lot of smart devices and systems, bringing them all together in a way that’s easy to manage and actually streamlines your life is a different matter. A different remote for every separate device and system is maddening. And the more systems and devices you have, the more potential there is for system failure. Not to mention you need the tech know-how to keep the systems running the way they are designed. Technology is great, until it’s not working the way you want – and then where do you turn?

Here’s where an integrator is key.

An integrator works closely with clients to create, install, and monitor a smart home that best suits the clients needs and wants.

Integrators bring their expertise and experience to their clients, ensuring the systems they install match the needs of the family and the home at optimal levels. They also monitor and care for the system after the installation is done, staying informed of tech updates and watching for other potential issues and improvements.

At Jackson Hole AV, our primary home automation platform, Savant, is one of the global leaders in smart home custom integration. One of the biggest advantages of the platform, “Savant Scenes,” streamlines the process for the owner by allowing them to design and pre-set home technology with a number of variables, and then implement the scene with a single button. “Dinner Party,” for instance, sets the lights, music, climate, and security to best complement the event. “Away,” can lower the shades, lock the doors, turn off the lights, and adjust the temperature after everyone leaves in the morning.

The rapid-paced advancements in smart home technology are exciting and full of possibilities. But a smart home full of disparate devices with a million different remotes and monitors is only frustrating and overwhelming for the home owner. True home automation means all the home technology works together seamlessly – and fulfills its mission to enhance the overall quality of life for the home owner.
