AI – The Future of Your Smart Home

The biggest influence on the popularity of smart home technology, some argue, has been AI-powered personal assistants.Artificial Intelligence hit the mass market in 2011 with Siri, followed by Alexa and Echo in 2014. Last year, 45.4 million people in the U.S. talked to a smart speaker. We can order up our favorite songs, dim the lights, and turn up the heat without even getting the couch. Still, we’re the ones who have to tell the system what we want.

On the near horizon is a smart home that can anticipate your needs and wants. The “Machine Learning” application will allow the system to learn and evolve using its direct experience within the home, coupled with its analysis of mass data. AI will be able to make assessments and manage aspects of the home experience, for more seamless, comfortable daily living.

Some systems are already adapting to homeowners’ needs based on information and experience. In a recent article, writer Jay Basen surveys a number of AI-driven smart home systems assisting homeowners in innovative ways. “Josh” will assess if a light pattern is different than normal, and then tell the homeowner they’ve left the lights on. Alexa will also let you know if the lights are on. Ambi Climate will automatically adjust your home’s temperature based on who is home, and what the system understands about those people’s preferences, along with temperature, weather, sunlight, and time of day. And Nest security cameras conduct facial recognition.

Working with your integrator now can put your home on the right path to take advantage of the AI innovations for years to come. In his article, Basen recommends pre-wiring a home for the sensors necessary for AI to work at its optimal level. Sensors will enable a home automation system to identify family members and their location in the home. It can then adjust the home to meet the family’s needs and preferences, room by room. Room temperature can be attuned to an individual’s partialities. Lights will automatically turn off or on, and then also adjust to the individual’s preferences. Shades can also raise and lower based on the preferences of the person in the room. Listening to music? The music will follow you as you move from room to room. And when everybody goes to bed, the home will automatically turn down the heat, turn off the lights, and set the security system.
