Tips From The Top

  • Generate Electricity When You Flush

Throw in a load of laundry, shower, flush the toilet – and generate energy you can store and use later.

Vortical Tech, a developer of alternative energy devices, recently announced the creation of its new device that generates electricity from home water usage.

The Hybrid Tesla Turbine converts kinetic energy from flowing water into electricity, producing 120 watts of electricity from regular household water use.

The average solar panel – when new – produces 200-320 watts of power. Vortical Tech's turbine is capable of generating more than 120 watts of power, equaling between two and six PV panels on cloudy days. Other turbines are currently available, but only generate one-tenth of the output.

The turbine can be used to augment solar PV battery systems with a consistent power source. When paired with an external battery pack, the energy can be stored and used later.

According to Vortical Tech, the advanced Tesla turbine design incorporates several advancements in boundary layer turbine technology to generate power equaling up to six solar PV panels on a cloudy day.

Nikola Tesla considered the boundary layer turbine one of his greatest inventions, and patented it in 1913.

Adding the turbines to solar photovoltaic and battery storage systems will contribute to balancing the utility grid load, because water and energy use go hand-in-hand.

Attaching the turbine to the main water line should not affect water pressure.

The turbine is still in the prototype stage and not yet available on the market. On its website, Vortical Tech says they are targeting a price point of roughly two average solar PV panels.

Vortical Tech has sough to develop eco-friendly energy solutions for more than a decade.
