Tips From The Top

  • Smart Beds for Smarter Sleep

A good night’s sleep is worth its weight in gold.

According to the American Sleep Association, 50-70 million American adults suffer from a sleep disorder. Insomnia is the most common, with 30% of adults having short term insomnia, and 10% reporting chronic. More than a third of adults report getting less than seven hours of sleep in a typical night – less than the 7-9 hours of sleep adults should get each night.

Integrated smart beds could get you the rest you need.

Smart features to help you get the best night’s rest range from smart mattresses, smart mattress pads, smart devices to complement your existing mattress, and wearable devices, plus any number of bedside table gadgets to control light and sound.

More bed makers are incorporating smart features to help you monitor how much sleep you get and adjust your bed’s incline and its temperature to better fit your individual preferences.

A recent CNET review of smart beds and accessories highlighted top-of-the-line sleep products for a premium sleep environment.

Eight makes a Sleep Tracker smart cover for mattresses. It integrates with Alexa, Nest, and IFTTT, and tracks how much sleep each individual person gets. So in the morning, you can ask Alexa how you slept and get the report. It also has a heating mechanism to keep you warm. CNET reviewers called it the “stand-out product” because it retrofits to any mattress, has two zones for sleep tracking (yours and your partner’s), and offers temperature control. And the app is easy to use.

CNET rated the Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed as most customizable. This high-end smart bed comes with a king FlexTop P6 mattress, a FlexFit traditional base, and two DualTemp mattress pads. It also has a range of sleep-tracking mattresses and accessories. The split mattress can be adjusted to fit each person’s preferences, and the DualTemp mattress pads provide two zones of temperature control. The 360 Smart Bed integrates with Nest, so users can connect their Nest Thermostat E to record the temperature of the bed and how that might affect their sleep.

The Beautyrest Sleeptracker goes under your mattress to track your sleep. It works with Alexa; in the morning you can ask for your sleep stats. Since it’s hidden under your mattress, it won’t interfere with your regular sleep the way a wearable device might. Beautyrest also makes a motorized base with unique features including USB chargers and a massage function.
