TV or Projector?
Choice is good—we all appreciate having options. But sometimes, as in the amazing abundance of incredible A/V tech available in our own homes, the sheer amount can seem like an avalanche rather than a windfall. Sometimes, it may seem easier to just throw up your hands and go back to the bunny ears.
That’s why it’s vital to have experienced experts to lead you through the process. In the case of smart homes, especially home theaters, we at Jackson Hole A/V bring years of experience and knowledge to our clients to help you on an individual, personalized level understand the best options specific to you.
Because it’s not just a question of what’s the best product available; it’s a question of the best product available for you. That depends on a lot, from personal use, priorities, and preferences, to home design and space. We want our clients to make the best product choices for what will serve them today—and into the future.
In a home theater, there are many components: the image, the source of the image, the sound, lighting, room dimensions, and use. All of these need to be integrated and complementary, considered in a total unit which will be greater than the sum of its parts.
Let’s talk about the question of projectors vs. TVs.
With today’s technology, home owners can have top-shelf cinema-grade equipment for your own personal use. But what’s the best viewing option for your particular space, preferences, and needs?
The temptation of bigger is better is a tricky side road and usually a distraction from what’s best. True, you can get those megalith flat-panel display TVs, and in some cases, it may be truly what you want and what’s best for you. If that’s the case—awesome! But size is a factor to consider, not a given. What serves you best may not be the biggest TV.
Flatscreen TVs can be a flexible, adaptable option for most rooms throughout a home. Samsung’s OLED and QLED screens of varying sizes are some of the best options out there, and offer an image and quality that is hard to beat.
When it comes to the designated home theater, the options are more varied. Projectors with short, medium, or long throws may be just the thing to take your home viewing to the ultimate unique home cinema experience. Michael Hamilton, a technical writer for AVPro and an instructor with Imagining Science outlined why projectors are superior to TVs with a detailed history of both options.
He argues that the sheer quality of image is far superior to that of TVs. Besides that basic fundamental, projectors for home spaces are more energy efficient than in the past; laser light sources consume less energy than lamp-based projectors and generate less radiated waste heat. With these improvements, the products last longer, and they are smaller in size, making them less intrusive in the space. We find that projectors are one of the key elements that take our clients’ home theater viewing to the next level, especially when integrated with a cinema-grade screen and sound system built for an optimal experience.
