Sometimes Smaller Is Better
Our clients have always valued their private home theater spaces. This year especially, we’ve been seeing a growing interest in immersive audio/video technology in our clients’ home living spaces. Dedicated home cinemas are still popular, but now more clients are asking for multipurpose media rooms, immersive audio, large-format TVs, and video walls.
Experts in integrated home technology note that even as our dedicated media spaces grow include more, a significant line of technology to serve these spaces is growing smaller. We’re not talking about the larger screens and loudspeakers our clients often ask for, but the accessories that serve them are shrinking to best serve the function of the overall space. That means amplifiers and receivers are slimming down to a more sleek, compact size. And now, movie servers are becoming more compact, too.
Kaleidescape, one of our top recommended movie servers, has introduced the new Mini Terra Prime to its Terra Prime line. This compact movie server is ideally suited for dedicated home theaters, multi-purpose media rooms, and even multi-room media systems. And it fulfills Kaleidescape’s vision to provide high-speed downloads, excellent quality playback, and plenty of storage for the large movie collections our clients prioritize. We’re talking 8 TB of solid-state storage, which can hold about 125 high-bitrate 4K movies (or 216 HD and 1,200 SD movies). These download in just four minutes over a 2.5 Gb Ethernet connection. The cherry on the top is that the Mini Terra can handle as many as 25 simultaneous playbacks at top-shelf quality. It’s totally silent (convection-cooled, rather than a fan) and tiny—it can fit alongside Kaleidescape’s Strato E on a single rack slot.
Why is Kaleidescape one of our favorite film servers? It’s so far beyond any other streaming service, and the one our clients continually rave about. They’re constantly developing new technology to best serve a variety of home entertainment needs with pristine quality and delivery.
Last year, the company introduced its entry level Strato V Movie Player, which can function as a standalone system or become part of a larger Kalediescape system. As an entry-level system, it stores up to 10 4K movies downloaded from the Kaleidescape Movie Store. These movies are high bitrate (up to 100 Mbps) and play back with uninterrupted flow. The movies are shown in standard dynamic range, HDR10, and Dolby Vision with upscaling of HD and SD content to 4K resolution. Lossless spatial audio means crisp sound clarity and totally immersive sound effects. And the Strato V Movie Player, like the new Mini Terra Prime, is scalable, so a server can be added for more movies and whole-home systems.
