The Theater With No Projector

For as long as there have been home theaters, the recipe has been the same: a projector in the back, a screen in the front, and a room dark enough to make the picture pop. That recipe still makes a beautiful theater. But there's a second way to build one now, and more of our clients are asking about it: the LED video wall.

What an LED wall is. Instead of throwing light onto a screen, an LED wall makes its own light. It's built from tiles, each covered in tiny LEDs, fitted together into one seamless picture. There's no projector, no lamp, and no screen. Because the wall is the light source, it stays bright and punchy even when the room isn't pitch dark, so it suits a media room or great room as well as a dedicated theater.

Any size the room calls for. Since the wall is made of tiles, the size is set by how many tiles you use. Barco's residential walls run from about 110 inches to well past 200, including wide Cinemascope shapes for people who want the movie to fill the wall edge to edge.

Why we like Barco's approach. A lot of LED walls on the market use a glossy coated surface. It looks great in a showroom, but in a real room it picks up reflections and glare, and the seams between tiles can show. According to Barco, its residential walls use only uncoated LED designs, with LEDs tested and matched so the color stays even across the whole wall. The result is a picture that looks like a picture, not a mirror. Barco is a name we already trust in the theater: we've built a reference cinema around Barco projection, and it's one of the brands we're proud to carry.

It has to be planned early. This is the part people don't expect. An LED wall isn't something you hang on a finished wall. It needs dedicated power, cooling for the heat it gives off, network wiring, and a plan for the control system so the wall comes on with the lights, the shades, and the sound. All of that is much easier, and much less expensive, to solve at the drawing stage than after the drywall is up.

And the speakers move. In a projector theater, the front speakers often hide behind an acoustically transparent screen. An LED wall is solid, so sound can't pass through it. That changes where the speakers go, and it's one more reason we design the room with our acoustical design partners from the start rather than fitting things in later.

Projector or LED? Both have a place. A great projector and screen in a properly dark room is still a wonderful way to watch a movie, and Barco makes some of the best. An LED wall shines in rooms with windows, rooms that do double duty, and for clients who want the biggest, brightest picture with nothing hanging from the ceiling. The right answer depends on the room and how you'll use it, and that's a conversation we enjoy having.
