ONE RECENT RESIDENCE: 30+ INDEPENDENT AUDIO ZONES, MAIN HOUSE TO BARN
One recent Teton-area residence we wired carries more than thirty independent audio zones — every bedroom, bath, and hallway in the main house, the guest house, the barn, and the terraces and courts outside, each one its own zone, each one controlled on its own. Another recent project runs fourteen zones across a main house and guest house, indoors and out. That's the actual scale whole-home audio reaches in a serious project — not a speaker in every room playing the same thing, but a system, specified room by room.
We're not tied to one speaker line. We draw from several of the industry's best architectural lines — James Loudspeaker, Sonance, Theory Audio Design, and Pro Audio Technology among them — and match the line to the room and the goal, not the other way around. A great room, a home theater, and a covered patio each call for a different specification; we'd rather get each one right than sell you the same speaker everywhere.
We generally steer away from speakers hidden entirely behind drywall. A handful of manufacturers sell "invisible" speakers that mount behind an intact wall and vibrate the surface itself to make sound. Driving sound through drywall softens it and takes the edge off the clarity a well-specified system should have — so it's not our default recommendation. If a client specifically wants that look for a particular room, we'll do it; we just want you to know the trade-off going in. Most rooms don't need it — a small, low-profile grille gets you nearly the same discretion without giving up the sound.
Dedicated theaters get their own specification. For a true home theater, we typically turn to Theory Audio Design or Pro Audio Technology rather than a whole-home architectural line — different acoustic goals call for different hardware. Outdoor audio that actually survives here. For anything outside — patios, terraces, fire pits, sport courts — we specify Coastal Source. Their hardware is built and tested specifically to withstand extreme weather, not adapted from an indoor line, which matters in a valley where the technology has to survive real winters, not a mild coastal one. One playlist on the patio, another at the fire pit, a third for a movie under the stars — each its own zone, same as inside.
One system, not a pile of apps. Audio doesn't live alone in a well-built home. As an authorized Savant and Control4 dealer, and with Josh.ai now a full control platform rather than just voice, we tie whole-home audio into the same scenes as lighting, shades, and climate. "Movie night" dims the room and drops the shades before the first track plays; "Good morning" brings up the kitchen speakers with the coffee. Keypads where you want them, an app everywhere else, and voice control for homes that would rather just ask.
Earlier is easier. Speaker placement and the wiring behind it are far simpler to get right before the drywall goes up than after. We work directly with architects and builders across the valley so the zone layout and wire runs fold into the construction set from the start — thirty-plus-zone projects like the one above only work because they're planned that early. Finished homes aren't out of options either: many rooms convert well, and an honest site visit tells us exactly what's possible.
What is whole-home audio, exactly? A sound system built into your entire home, not a speaker in every room playing the same thing. Each room or zone is specified on its own and controlled independently — different music, in different rooms, at the same time — from a keypad or your phone. Our larger projects run into the dozens of zones across a property; even a modest system is built the same way, just smaller.
Do you only install one brand of speaker? No. We work with several of the best architectural lines in the industry — James Loudspeaker, Sonance, Theory Audio Design, Pro Audio Technology, and others — and specify whichever fits the room and the goal, including different lines in different rooms of the same house.
Do you install Sonos? Yes. Sonos is easy to use, and it's a great fit for many rooms and homes, especially retrofits, where running new speaker wire isn't practical. For larger whole-home systems we'll often pair it with, or recommend, an architectural line wired back to a central rack instead. We'll walk you through the options and help you choose what fits your home.
Will I actually see the speakers? You'll usually see a small, low-profile grille rather than nothing at all. How does audio tie into the rest of the house? As an authorized Savant and Control4 dealer that also builds on Josh.ai's control platform, we build audio into the same whole-home scenes as lighting, shades, and climate, so one command — a keypad press, an app tap, or a voice request — sets the room the way you want it.
Will you service an audio system another company installed? Yes. We take over, reprogram, and maintain audio and whole-home systems installed by others throughout Jackson Hole and the surrounding valleys, including Alpine, Victor, and Driggs.
